Detective Comics #35

"The Case of the Ruby Idol"

The story begins with Bruce Wayne visiting Commissioner Gordon, where they meet a museum curator named Weldon. Weldon seeks police protection after receiving death threats from a group claiming to worship a ruby idol of the Hindu god of destruction, Kila. The idol had been sold to Weldon by an explorer named Sheldon Lenox, who is also targeted by the group.

When the police attempt to protect Lenox, he is attacked and seemingly killed by the worshipers. The idol is placed under police protection, but criminals and the worshipers continue to pursue it. Batman investigates and discovers that the idol has been taken to a Chinatown shop owned by a fence named Sin Fang.

Batman confronts Sin Fang, who leads him into a series of deadly traps, including sword-wielding attackers, mustard gas, and a water trap. Using his ingenuity, Batman escapes and fakes his death to outwit Sin Fang. Ultimately, Batman retrieves the idol and ensures it is safe, bringing the case to a close.

This story showcases Batman's detective skills, resourcefulness, and early Golden Age grit.
